Breaking News English is now in 7 levels…
Goin’ back to my roots
The latest stage in the development of my site sees the introduction of lessons at seven levels. I used to offer the same news story at “easier” and “harder” levels (way back in 2005-06) and am now happy that I can bring back graded, multi-level lessons.
The 7 levels
The lowest level is Level 0 (for good elementary students) and the highest is Level 6 (upper-intermediate and beyond). Level 0 has 120 words and the MP3 is about 60-70-seconds long; Level 6 has 250 words, with a 2-minute audio. Levels 0-3 are based on an “easier” lesson; levels 4-6 are based on a different “harder” story two days later.
Up and down
If a student finds a Level 0 story too easy, they can try the same story at the more challenging Level 1. Conversely, if a student finds Level 3 a little too much, they can try Level 2 and then move back up to Level 3 once (s)he has understood the words, ideas and grammar at the lower level.
The new levels are ideal for classes where students are at different levels. They can choose which version of the news story best suits them. The teacher can then use the discussions and other speaking activities found in the “big” levels 3 and 6 for the whole class.
Activities and freebies
All levels have a graded news reading and listening, a printable PDF, speed reading, and many online quizzes and activities.
Levels 3 and 6 are “big” lessons – a 26-page PDF, a 2-page mini handout, more online activities, dictation, vocabulary quizzes, etc.
What do you think?
PLEASE write and let me know your thoughts – the site keeps getting bigger (and hopefully better because of the feedback I receive.
